Your attorney can catch interpretation errors in court

Civil, criminal and immigration courts and tribunals provide interpreters when a party does not speak English. But interpreting is difficult, and mistakes can happen when questions and answers are rendered between English and Chinese. When the judge or adjudicator speaks only English and the client speaks only Chinese, neither of them may realize that a question or answer was interpreted incorrectly.

Attorney Ho is fluent in both languages. When a court-appointed interpreter is used, she listens to both sides of the exchange, so that she is able to:

  • Recognize when a question put to you is interpreted inaccurately.
  • Recognize when your answer is rendered incorrectly in English.
  • Raise the problem with the judge or adjudicator, as the court’s procedures permit, so it can be corrected on the record.
  • Prepare you before the hearing on how to testify clearly through an interpreter.

Every case is different, and this does not guarantee any particular outcome.
